|
During the twentieth century, which has been labeled the "century of genocide," we witnessed an almost unimaginable series of tragedies, ranging from the destruction of indigenous peoples, slaughter of the Herero, death marches of Armenians, and crematoriums of Auschwitz to the killing fields of Cambodia, the disappeared of Latin America, rape pens and roadside "selections" in Rwanda, and mass graves of Bosnia. Such violence continues unabated in the world today as we have seen in Darfur, 9/11 and the war on terror, Afghanistan, and Iraq. The Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights (CGHR) seeks to address the urgent need for greater understanding of and education about such extreme violence and human rights abuses. Accordingly, the Center has a fourfold mission: (a) To promote interdisciplinary research and scholarship on genocide and human rights; (b) To educate students and the public about genocide and human rights; (c) To reach out to survivor and professional communities, organizations, and government offices in New Jersey and beyond that are concerned about these issues; and (d) To coordinate and support interdisciplinary initiatives about genocide and human rights by relevant institutes and faculty at Rutgers-Newark, across the three Rutgers campuses, throughout New Jersey and the New York Metropolitan area, domestically and abroad. |
